THE Leni Lenape Indians called it Mawewi -- the meeting place of rivers and paths -- and though its modern name, Mahwah, is slightly different, it is as appropriate today as it was in 1700, when the first white settler, Blandina Bayard, established a trading post there.
The township is on the New York-New Jersey state line. Two major highways, Routes 17 and 202, pass through and it is within a mile of the Gov. Thomas E. Dewey Thruway and less than 10 miles from the Garden State Parkway. Its largest commercial ratable, the 22-story, $66 million International Crossroads complex, which includes a Sheraton Hotel, offices, and a convention center, was built where a Ford plant used to stand.
Mahwah is Bergen County's largest municipality. The 26-square-mile township, where the Ramapo Mountains slope down to the Ramapo River, is also one of the most environmentally sensitive. Four thousand acres, almost a quarter of its total area, are state or county park land, giving it a rural ambiance reinforced by wooded lots, hilly streets and a lack of sidewalks.
Some of the largest houses are in the new Rio Vista neighborhood, off Campgaw Road. Several 8,000-square-foot colonials and tudors on two-acre lots on Trotters Lane or Crocker Mansion Drive are valued at more than a million dollars, said William F. Dator, president of the Dator Agency real estate brokerage. The developer, Darlington Associates of Englewood Cliffs, sells one- to two-acre lots for $225,000 to $350,000. The buyers have their own homes built, after their plans are approved by the company architect, who will not approve, among other things, aluminum or vinyl siding.
Rio Vista surrounds the 53,000-square-foot brick and limestone Crocker Mansion, built in 1901 for George Crocker, son of one of the founders of the Southern Pacific Railroad. The developer has the township's approval to convert it into a conference center and catering hall.
